Toward Vision 2020:
Dialogue in Moral and Religious
Formation in Education
October 24-28, 2007
THEME: Toward Vision 2020: Dialogue in Moral and Religious Formation in Education
Rationale:
The Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conference – Office of Education and Student Chaplaincy (FABC-OESC) has taken the path of dialogue and promotion of values as corner stones of its programs and activities for the years 2005-2008. This was clearly stated in the action plan of the meeting of the Officers of the OESC during the 8th Plenary Assembly of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conference in
Realizing this vision, in 2005 the Office has organized the “Module Making for Dialogue with Islam.” The aim was to produce materials and dialogue-dynamics and initiate an Asian wide strategy to come up with a module that would aid facilitators, teachers and agents of dialogue in their encounter with our Muslim Brothers and Sisters. Inspired by the success of this meeting and encouraged by the need to produce dialogue-dynamics and materials in a wider Asian dialogue, a meeting in Taiwan was held in the early part of 2006 with the theme “Catholicism encountering Confucianism, Taoism and Folk Religiosity,” in cooperation with the Taiwan Bishops’ Conference and Fu Jen Catholic University of Taiwan.
An effective dialogue, however, requires a deeper and more integral approach in the family. An attempt to bring a holistic approach on dialogue to institutions of learning necessitates a return to the situation of the family: the domestic church. Interfaith marriages, single parenting, migrant working parents and the increasing individualism among the young are the challenges the Asian Churches face in our millennium. It is for this reason that the Office organizes the meeting on “family catechesis: Challenges from Asian realities” in the latter part of 2006.
With the module materials in place and the family catechesis reinvigorated, the Office embarks on listening to the “lights and shadows” of the youth sector in order to draw out concrete pastoral plans in enfleshing their spirit of dialogue and enhancing their Christian values. This will be the main objective of the “Empowerment of the youth: The Evangelizers of
After a series of initiatives from the hierarchy, to the agents of dialogue, to the family, to the youth sector, the Office with Assumption University and University of Santo Tomas, embarks to gather all of them in a congress to bring the network into fusion and discuss its synergy as the powerhouse of the New Way of Being Church in Asia for the next millennium. OESC envisions a future where moral formation is the mission and essential dynamics of all educational initiatives and programs, thus the theme: toward vision 2020: Dialogue in Moral and Religious Formation in Education.
Objectives:
i. To have an in-depth study regarding the significance and impact of the theme to the Churches in
ii. To convoke youth and teachers along with educational experts to reflect on what transpired in the last forty years of Dialogue in Moral and Religious Formation of the Churches in Asia; and,
iii. To consult the Asian Episcopal commission on education in Asian countries about their stands and approaches in the preservation of Gospel values along with socio-cultural values creating sound inculturation of faith.
