Calling for Reflections: full employment and decent work for all

Advocacy

Dear friends,

As it was discussed in Malaysia, it has always been important to involve the movement in the process of making statements at the United Nations.  There is an opportunity coming up to submit a written statement to the 46th Session of the Commission on Social Development regarding the theme “full employment and decent work for all.”  I would like to take the initiative to ask for you participation.

Please review this email which I have prepared so facilitate a closer relationship between the UN Team and the movement.  It is very important that your thoughts, reflections, analysis, etc. be submitted NO LATER THAN SUNDAY 04 NOVEMBER 2007.  Due to a very tight timetable, it will be quite difficult for me to be flexible on this deadline  The next step would be to have IMCS and ICMICA to bring our reflections together to write ONE statement as Pax Romana.  We will be quite limited in the breadth of our statement as we are limited to 1,500 words maximum.  So, please be very clear and concise.  Once this statement is completed it will be submitted to the UN for translation and distribution to the member states.

Some questions you may want to ask yourself include, but not limited to: Are these reports of the United Nations and other intergovernmental organizations a true reflection or representation of the reality of our students in our movement or of youth in general?  How so or how not?  What are some of suggested solutions?  Are there any issues or concerns that are important but not mentioned in relation to the theme?  How are students limited, marginalized, or prevented from utilizing their educational potential for full employment and decent work?  Describe the value of life-long learning?  What are the benefits of having a tertiary level education in achieving employment and work goals?  Who are the vulnerable groups or targeted groups?

Most especially, here is a question that pertains directly to the mandate of the IMCS for the next four years as agreed at the IC in Malaysia regarding “building a culture of peace and solidarity”: What are the relationships and bridges between full employment / decent work and culture of peace/solidarity?  Consider strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

And many more – it’s up to you.  An example of what to expect as an end product of this participation is attached.  I look forward to hearing your thoughts and input.  Thank you!

Aloha,

Christopher Derige Malano
