February 12, 2007

Dearest friends of BCSM,

Peace of Christ from IMCS Asia Pacific coordination and heartiest congratulations to our affiliated full member, BCSM on successfully living 15 years of playing the prophetic role every Catholic is called to fulfill.  We are indeed most glad that BCSM has made it so far in the struggle to practice the “special option for the poor” and peace building which Jesus consciously and clearly made. As a community of university students, BCSM has constantly inspired its members to play the role of intelligentsia in solving the injustices of society and has generated many leaders at both local and international scene. Continue to inspire and be inspired!

To Our Friends in One Struggle

We are students of Psychology of University of Sanata Dharma Yogyakarta what year 1997 - 1998 are being injusticed by the institution where we are studied.

Actually we are attempt when our faculty, Psychology, opened in 1997.  That's mean, when the faculty of Psychology didn’t established, our faculty might be closed. These condition were bad for us.

But the establishment condition of Psychology further good for the institution of where we are studied. The quantity of students register to Psychology are increase. Vice versa, that’s bad condition students accepted.

Students what year 1997 - 1998 grew from bad condition, when national economics fall. We are not only student which its duty only go to university, but also circumstance force us become the labours. Worse again for the students what year 1997 - 1998 which also citizen of Yogyakarta, the effect of earthquake make cumulative economics burden, besides born down upon problem the effect of earthquake is also borne down upon problem in education world.

Every day we have to work, to can eat, besides study. Natural of human being express that human being of need eat, then other needs, like education need to be fulfilled. Psychology teaches this. But in reality the natural of this human being is refused the institution of where we study although it is claimed humanist, humanitarian.

Our lecturers accused us with the expression indicating that us is idlers, fools, though we every day have to work for food so can stay alive, besides go to university. In class, our rights to learn also start hijacked, though can take vacation. Our opportunity to study closed.

All time we only become the dairy cattle, something that the advantage conduct the institution of where we study, and we depressed. Voice of the student claiming the justice in the world of education be silenced. On 2001, students demonstrate with 3 claims: refusing Drop Out Univeristy system, refusing system presence 75 % in class, and refuse the abolition of finance dispensation. On 2002, finance dispensation representing poor students opportunity which of paying late without fine for students what year of 2002 was abolished. On 2004, students of Sanata Dharma made hunger strike insensible to refuse the high tuition increase when new students register. On 2005, faculties which did not conducive to the advantage were closed, and the student is dropped out from campus. The climax now when rector commutation on 2006 and yield the new policy that students what year 1997 - 1998 must to dropped out from campus, though they are part of attempt students.

This is injustice which must be received the students University of Sanata Dharma Yogyakarta. Though during the time we are taught about humanist value, humanism, but exactly student treated with unhumanist, unhumanism. Ironically this happened in institution managed Catholic priests which its religion teach love.

We only wish the fair opportunity for the our future, whereas our institution where we are studied is keeping and trying to kick out us, back off us.
Education opportunity is muzzled is equal with to break the overall of all our life. We are not student  have achievement which must be given appreciation, but we are student which is because of the worse economics circumstance force us to become the labours and require the piece of understanding.

Herewith we ask your support for the students of Psychology of University of Sanata Dharma Yogyakarta what year 1997 - 1998 are treated institution where we are studied.

Herewith we ask piece of your time to assist us.

We need your voices as the real support for us.

[PMKRI] Workshop on Neo-Liberalism and Human Rights

Workshop on Neo-Liberalism and Human Rights

PMKRI was invited to attend workshop on Neo-liberalism, Human Rights Violations and Poverty sponsored by World Student Christian Federation (WSCF) Asia Pacific,   as representative of Ecumenical Network Indonesian Students and Youth (ENISY). The workshop aimed to raise awareness among student Christian movements about the impacts of neo-liberalism, human rights violation and poverty was taken place at Medan, Indonesia from 2 to 10 September.
Dr. George Junus Aditjondro, keynote speaker at the workshop concluded that poverty and human rights are inherent with the imposition of neo-liberalism upon the countries of the third world. As shown very clearly by the cases of Indonesia under Soeharto and Chile under Pinochet, these two outstanding cases of two developing countries were prepared for capitalist development, to be integrated into the economies of the Club of Davos. A systemic destruction of all the major productive forces in these societies and their progressive intellectual elites seems to be a condition sine qua non to transform these countries into neo-liberal showcases. Consequently, the 1965 tragedy in Indonesia and 1973 tragedy in Chile had set the stage for wide scale human rights violations, not only in these two countries as well as in other countries following this neo-liberal model.

He also noted that human rights violations to prepare the ground for neo-liberalism has not ended with the tragedies in Indonesia and Chile, but have continued ever since, due to the systemic marginalization of the workers, the peasants, and all other “subaltern classes”, borrowing from Antonio Gramsci. The most spectacular forms of marginalization have occurred in the form of environmental degradation. The other form of systemic marginalization is the exploitation of workers, due to the absence of strong labour unions and the lack of government’s willingness to defend workers right. These three forms of marginalization, which are chronologically
(a) Eviction from home, workplace and/or market;
(b) Environmental degradation on various forms;
(c) Exploitation of work force can be seen as the ‘unholy trinity’ of neo-liberalism.
Recommend of workshop were urge Students Christian Movements to set up human rights desk in their organizational structure and build up working group on human rights.
